Week of April 28th, 2008
Nice rain! We needed it. It is spring and every plant imaginable is popping in to flower and leaf. For all that new growth to fulfill its potential there must be adequate water to do so. A good soaking rain once a week fills the bill. Every once in a while it spoils our plans for a weekend or holiday, but if you want to be green you also want it to be wet!
May is the month for me. Sometimes I just walk or drive around and look at all the sprouting beauty. There is one of my favorite wisterias (it is ancient) curling up a tree across from Red Bank Regional HS on Harding road, some beautiful Exbury azaleas on Sycamore Avenue in Shrewsbury, and an amazing cherry laurel hedge driving down Rumson Road These are just a few of my favorites. There are so many. The Two River area teems with specimen quality trees, shrubs, flowers, and all that horticulture and home owners hard work has to offer us. It is all for free; just take a walk or a drive!
Every year we are a supporter and sponsor of the Two River Antique Show and Garden Tour. This event offers homeowners the opportunity to tour some of the finest gardens in our area. Undoubtedly, if you are a gardener it is an event made for you! At these homes you are able to see many examples of fine landscaping, and also plants at the peak of their life span. There are so many beautiful plants in the world and at our garden center we have one of the best selections in the area from some of the finest growers including ourselves. What the tour allows you to see is these plants, full size. Many plants are relatively unimpressive in pots, but for those of us that know they are “diamonds in the rough”. This year we are the sponsor of a bus trip for the Two River Antique Show and Garden Tour to Winterthur, one of the premier locations in the country for viewing gardens, period room settings, and antiques. This will be a great trip to see many specimen plantings and plants as well as choice antiques.
For more information please visit (enter their web site) or the link on our website. The tour is Wednesday, May 14th. Tickets include all admissions, breakfast by Sickles Market, and lunch at Winterthur. If you have never been: Winterthur is worth the trip. If you have been, you know how beautiful and fascinating it is and how nice a return trip would be! Go to the link and sign up today!
The year, the Garden tour itself is June 7th and 8th. As always, I am sure it will be a very special event. Six wonderful area gardens are on the tour and they are fairly close together so that you can visit all in a day and spend a little time observing all of nature’s glory on display at these area homes. This time period is one of the most prolific horticulturally, although there is garden interest in all four seasons. An abundance of perennials are in bloom and most annuals are filling in nicely. It is a great time of the year to get an idea of the structure of the gardens and also to see much of the plants blooming. If it is a little rainy just bring a big umbrella!
Next week Cinco Di Mayo is on Monday. Here, at Sickles Market, we pride ourselves on having some of the finest Mexican food to make your celebration festive and authentic. Our guacamole, homemade salsas, black bean salsas are the best around. Our burritos, quesadillas, and enchiladas make for great meals and great Cinco Di Mayo celebrations. Of course, we have a myriad of brands of great tortilla chips and the best tasting brands of jarred salsas. Make next Monday night’s Cinco Di Mayo dinner special with great Mexican food from our kitchen!
Of course upcoming is Mother’s Day one of the most special days of the year for all of us. Make your Mom’s day special with flowers from Sickles Market candy, or a beautiful potted rose. If you live far away and your Mom is here you can order a gift card online from our website and have it sent right to your Mom. We can then help her shop for any one of her favorite things and make it an experience she will remember often and fondly. Don’t forget Mom!
Soon too is Memorial Day. We will be closed on Monday, May 26th in honor of this national holiday. It is early this year but it is always the kick off for BBQ season. With great meats in our meat case, great BBQ sauces on our shelves, and all the chips, dips and prepared foods you could want plus the best produce in New Jersey. We have got you covered from an intimate dinner to a full blown party. As always we appreciate you as a customer and for supporting our local business.
Have a great week!
